Program 5: Golden Triangle

We will depart from your hotel and go to the very well known white temple and the Monkey cave, where you can feed the wild Monkeys and release fish to the river for Thai making merit. Continue driving up to the northern most point of Thailand Mae Sai Town, Thai-Burmese trading border to see jade cutting factory and exploring a local market, famous for products from southern China, Burma and Laos. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Proceed to golden triangle area, where the border of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Visit also opium museum. then take the speed boat-cruise along Mae Khong River to Donxao Island. then continue on to the old capital of Chiang Saen aged back to A.D. 1262 located on the steep bank of Mekong river opposite to Laos, to visit some magnificent ancient ruins and temples.

We will drive up to the highest mountain peak on the Thai – Burmese border, Doi Tung, 2,000 meters above sea-level. In the past, the forest area around Doi Tung was destroyed by slash-and-burn cultivation. In 1987, the Doi Tung Development Project was established according to the King’s mother’s initiative. A visit is made at Mae Fah Luang Garden, Royal villa and Hall of inspiration. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Continue driving up to the northern most point of Thailand Mae Sai Town, Thai-Burmese trading border to see a jade cutting and polishing factory and exploring a local market, famous for products from southern China, Burma and Laos. Visit also Wat Doi Wao (scorpion temple), where you will see a panoramic view of Thailand and Myanmar and the bamboo carved Buddha Image.

Then drive on uphill to visit the Yao and Akha tribal villages before continuing driving up Doi Mae Salong to Santikiri KMT Yunan Chinese refugee settlement, with its tea and coffee plantations and also a co-op store where home made wines, medical herbs and other locally grown products are sold

The villagers are ethnic Chinese, descendent of Kuomintang Nationalist Chinese army regiment that took refuge in Thailand almost 50 years ago when communist forces won the civil war in mainland China. Doi Mae Salong enjoys a cool and refreshing climate all year round. In January, Thai cherry blossom Sakura flowers cover the hillsides.

Leave you hotel for Mae Chan 40 kms away. Then drive uphill to visit Lahu and Yao hill tribe villages. Continue driving up Doi Mae Salong to Santikiri KMT Yunan Chinese refugee settlement, with its tea and coffee plantations and also a co-op store where home made wines, medical herbs and other locally grown products are sold. Then visit an Akha village at Pakha village.  Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Proceed to the Golden Triangle area, where the border of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Visit also opium museum. Then take the speed boat-cruise along Mae Khong River to Donxao Island. continue on to the old capital of Chiang Saen aged back to AD 1262 located on the steep bank of Mae Khong river opposite to Laos, to visit some magnificent ancient ruins and temples.

Then visit Akha and Long- necked Karen hill village at Baan Ya Pa, anew settlement village migrated from Southern Burma almost ten years ago (when they had political problems). Lunch is arranged at a Chinese restaurant. Continue driving up Doi Mae Salong to Santikiri KMT Yunan Chinese refugee settlement, with its tea and coffee plantations and also a co-op store where home made wines, medical herbs and other locally grown products are sold. Visit a tea plantation before returning to the hotel.

Program 11: Hill tribe villages and Mae Fah Luang gardens

Highlights: Boat rides, Elephant safari, hill tribe villages and Huay Mae Sai water fall

Leave your hotel for Mae Kok boat trip by long-tail boat up to a Karen hill tribe village, where you will start two hours elephant trekking up and down hill into the woods, to a Yao hill tribe village.  Then take the local taxi to visit an Akha village, where you can learn their life style and beliefs (they are still animists so you will see Akha spirit gates and swing).  Picnic lunch or sit down is provided at the local restaurant. Afterward you will be hiking up to the Huay Mae Sai waterfall, where you will enjoy the cool breeze, swimming and a short rest. After that we will ride the Song Taew back to a Lahu village and visit a Chiang Rai handicrafts center before returning to the hotel.

Depart your hotel for Mae Sai, visit a jade cutting and polishing factory before crossing the border to Tachilek city and Talaw market, famous for products from southern China, Burma and Laos. Then take the local taxi to a Burmese and Shan wet market. Continue onto Shwe Da kongstupa and Wat Sai Muang, where the bamboo weaved Buddha image is enshrined in the image hall. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. Proceed to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Then visit the Opium Museum.  Next we take a speed boat-cruise along the Mekong River to Donxao Island.  After that we will continue on to the old capital of Chiang Saen dating back to A.D. 1262 located on the steep bank of Mekong river opposite Laos, to visit some magnificent ancient ruins and temples.

Program 21: Chiang Rai Raft

Highlights: Huay Mae Sai falls, Elephant riding, Rafting on Maekok, Hot spring

Depart hotel for the Buddha cave and the waterfall outside of Ruammit then swimming in the pool below it.  Riding the Elephant for an hour in Ruammit through the jungle and over the river (no elephant tricks, no shows) Going just west of the village of Ruammit (about half way to Tha Ton) and taking a leisurely raft ride down the Mae Kok River, with either lunch cooked on the raft or a picnic box, then getting off the raft to visit the local Hill Tribes and the suspension bridge, then on to the Pha Sert hot springs.  Visit the Huay Mae Sai waterfall outside of Ruammit and swim in the pool below it if it is open.
